Farewell to the Slopes: Dreßen's Final Descent Marks a 'Loss for the Ski Circus
In Kitzbühel, ski racer Thomas Dreßen is set to bid farewell to the slopes, and his final run on the Streif today (11:30 a.m./ARD and Eurosport) is expected to be met with abundant applause.
Teammate Romed Baumann expressed regret about the 30-year-old's premature retirement, marked by injuries and surgeries. Dreßen, acknowledging the ongoing battle with his body, decided to conclude his career earlier than planned.
“It became apparent somewhere. I was in the room with him and saw how much he had to invest to get to driving,” Baumann reported. Andreas Sander, the downhill runner-up in the 2021 World Championships, empathized, saying Dreßen "certainly made the right decision."
Even beyond the German team, Dreßen's departure is mourned. Dominik Paris, a four-time winner in Kitzbühel, called it a "loss for the ski circus" and praised Dreßen as a "great competitor" with whom they had a lot of fun. The final run in front of the fans is expected to be a "special" moment.
Respect is given to Dreßen for his decision to stop now. Paris acknowledged that Dreßen still has "two-thirds of his life ahead of him" and wished him the best on his next journey.
Dreßen is participating in his 80th World Cup race in Kitzbühel, exactly six years after his first sensational victory on the Streif. Despite four more World Cup successes, he faced numerous health setbacks, particularly damaging his right knee. Dreßen opted out of the first descent this weekend in Tyrol on Friday.
